  2. Business Strategy

    • Focuses on: “How should we compete in a given business?”

    • Porter’s Generic Strategies apply here: Cost Leadership, Differentiation, Focus

  3. Functional Strategy

    • Focuses on: “How do we implement business strategy at the department level?”

    • Includes: Marketing strategy, HR strategy, operations strategy, etc.

Corporate-level strategies are the big-picture, overarching plans that a company uses to manage its overall portfolio of businesses and decide which industries or markets to compete in.

  • While business-level strategies focus on how to compete within a single industry or market,

  • Corporate-level strategies focus on which industries or markets the company should be in and how to create value across those businesses.
