Levels of Strategy: Where It All Begins

  1. Corporate Strategy (Top-level)

    • Focuses on: “What business should we be in?”

    • Relevant for: Multi-business firms (like Tata Group, Reliance)

    • Includes: Parenting Strategy, Portfolio Management, Directional Strategy

  2. Business Strategy

    • Focuses on: “How should we compete in a given business?”

    • Porter’s Generic Strategies apply here: Cost Leadership, Differentiation, Focus

  3. Functional Strategy

    • Focuses on: “How do we implement business strategy at the department level?”

    • Includes: Marketing strategy, HR strategy, operations strategy, etc.
